The last two months have been good to refining stocks like Valero Energy (VLO), Holly Frontier (HFC) and Phillips 66 (PSX)–maybe too good.
Bloomberg NewsRaymond James’ Cory Garcia and Pavel Molchanov explain:
Over the past two months, the bullish sentiment on U.S. refining has become increasingly consensus in fact, some may even look at it as a rowded trade While we wouldn quite go that far, particularly given our above-consensus outlook on earnings power in 2015, the simple reality is that the Street has caught up to our near-term expectations for refiners. Looking at the WTI-Brent spread, the futures strip is actually signaling a widening from ~$11/Bbl today towards $16/Bbl by 2016. Furthermore, investors are already positioned for the potential blowout in Gulf Coast spreads this spring. Aside from general seasonality, it tough to paint a bullish picture for gasoline/diesel cracks amid the continued upward creep in global refining capacity. And after the recent run-up in the stocks, valuations are sitting near the top end of the historical range. Lastly, while we believe large-scale U.S. crude exports are still a long ways off, the debate in Washington has been gaining some momentum an overhang for the stocks. So we don see much in the way of near-term catalysts to drive the next leg up in refining stocks during the historically weaker summer months.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
NovaGold Resources (NYSEMKT: NG ) will give investors its quarterly report on Wednesday. But the mining company has already seen its stock plunge in the wake of crashing gold prices, and NovaGold earnings results aren't likely to give investors much good news barring a big surprise.

The worst performer in the sector was NovaGold Resources (NYSEMKT: NG ) , which fell 13% yesterday as it scrambles to make sense of its Donlin Gold project in Alaska, the biggest known undeveloped gold deposit anywhere. The joint venture with Barrick has essentially been in limbo since NovaGold's partner said last year it no longer made economic sense to pursue it.

Moreover, highly speculative miners have also done badly. NovaGold Resources (NYSEMKT: NG ) represented a $130 million investment for Paulson as of March 31, and it has lost more than 55% year-to-date as investors question whether the company will successfully get its Donlin Gold project in Alaska off the ground.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Traders Reserve]
C&J Energy Services (CJES) grew more than 25% in 2012, after tripling in 2011, but has stalled in 2013 and will come in with near-zero growth. Part of the reason is the softening of oil prices and the shuttering marginal fields C&J Energy Services provides fracking-related oil field services on a spot basis with prices defined under long-term contracts.
- [By Aaron Levitt]
For investors, the choice is clear — you need to focus globally when it comes to oil stocks. North American-focused oil stocks like C&J Energy (CJES) and Basic Energy Services (BAS) might not be up to snuff in such a highly challenging pricing environment.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Travis Hoium]
What's more important for the industry is that capacity expansion in China has stopped and it appears behavior is changing. It's no longer just about adding capacity; we've now changed focus to balance sheets and systems. For an example of how important projects have become we can look at Canadian Solar's (NASDAQ: CSIQ ) earnings announcement just yesterday that touted 400 MW of projects in Canada. Even Chinese companies are beginning to see the value in building and selling energy over just selling modules.
