Hot Consumer Companies To Buy Right Now

It seems like hopes for a strong back-to-school season (not to mention a more general spending recovery overall) are fading away for Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT). Weak consumer spending may not be a huge surprise this quarter, but I found it interesting that the company also lost some operating leverage. In any case, while Wal-Mart really isn't the sort of stock to buy or sell on the basis of one quarter, but I find the valuation and potential here to be pretty underwhelming on the whole.

Sluggish Results On Multiple Fronts
With only one exception, I think this is a quarter where Wal-Mart will have disappointed most analysts and investors at pretty much every point on the income statement. The magnitude of the disappointments aren't very large, but they do make it harder to argue for a bullish case for the shares.

Revenue rose 2.4% as reported this quarter, or 2.8% on a constant currency basis. That was a little weaker than expected, with the weakness showing up in all three major divisions. U.S. Wal-Mart sales were up 2%, Sam's Club sales were up 2.6%, and International sales were up 2.9% (or 4.4% in constant currency). On a comp basis, same store sales were flat (versus an expectation of 1% growth), with U.S. Wal-Mart flat (versus expectations of 0.6% growth) and Sam's up 1.7%. International comps were mixed, with negative comps in the U.K., Mexico, Japan, and Canada, offset by some growth in Brazil, Africa, and China.

The biggest new holdings are Canadian Pacific Railwayand Allstate. Other new holdings of interest include Pinnacle Foods (NYSE: PF  ) and Eaton (NYSE: ETN  ) . Pinnacle Foods debuted via an IPO earlier this year, and soon after, initiateda dividend, which yields about 2.8%. Its brandsinclude Birds Eye, Aunt Jemima, Hungry-Man, Van de Kamp's, Armour, Lender's, Mrs. Paul's, Vlasic, Log Cabin, Mrs. Butterworth, and Duncan Hines, among others. With the company carrying significant debt, it's reasonable that some worry about its interest in acquiring Unilever'sWish-Bone salad dressing brand and Del Monte Foods' canned foods.

Moreover, all three of these stocks have been the subject of paid promotions or investor relation campaigns. With the promotions in mind, is it to late to dump these small cap stocks or will this week present a buying opportunity? Here is a closer look:

Hot Consumer Companies To Buy Right Now: McDonald's Corporation(MCD)

McDonald?s Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a worldwide foodservice retailer. It franchises and operates McDonald?s restaurants that offer various food items, soft drinks, coffee, and other beverages. As of December 31, 2009, the company operated 32,478 restaurants in 117 countries, of which 26,216 were operated by franchisees; and 6,262 were operated by the company. McDonald?s Corporation was founded in 1948 and is based in Oak Brook, Illinois.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Nicole Seghetti]

The study found thatMcDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) is the single most frequented business in the U.S., despite the company's same-store sales declines since early last year. The fast-food giant is scaling back its bloated menu, which has expanded by 70% since 2007 to roughly 145 items. Menu bloat has led to slower operations, tarnishing customer service. The company has more singularly focused on the value-conscious consumer, but the drive toward this consumer has hurt McDonald's. The Golden Arches saw weak earnings growth in the most recent quarter, due to sacrificing profit margins by focusing on value menus to avoid losing customers.

McDonald (NYSE: MCD), the world largest retail food chain, revealed this week that it plans to return $18 billion to $20 billion to shareholders between 2014 and 2016 through a combination of dividends and share repurchases. It yet another sign that this company, which virtually invented the fast food concept, is still staying ahead of the competition.

Since bottoming out below $15 in January of 2003, the share price recently crested above $100 again, and now has a market cap of $100 billion. Yet it still trades at a price-earnings ratio of 18, about the same as the market (actually, a slight discount to the market) and pays a dividend yield of more than 3 percent. If you didn know it was a restaurant and just looked at the financial stats, you might mistake it for a tech stock.

McDonald has long been the leader in providing tasty food to people in a hurry. As Americanstastes have shifted toward healthier fare in recent years, some analysts questioned McDonald’s ability to keep up with the times. But by expanding its menu with more salads and other healthy options, and adjusting its marketing accordingly, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company has kept pace with the times.

The proof is in the numbers. The corporation recently announced that global comparable sales increased 1.2% in April over the same month in 2013. Even in a market with more fast food choices than ever, McDonald has found a way to increase revenue.

The global reach of the company is a key factor here. Comparable sales were actually flat in the United States during April not all that surprising considering the state of the economy (the government just reported that the U.S. economy actually contracted by 1 percent in the first quarter of 2014) and eating out is always one of first things consumers cut back on.

So why did revenues increase overall? Because sales in the Pacific region, the Middle East and Africa were up 2.9 per
