What do Prospect Capital Corporation (NASDAQ:PSEC), Astec Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTE), and First Financial Corp. (NASDAQ:THFF) have in common? Not much, on the surface. In fact, were it not for something very specific to one particular person (me), they'd have nothing in common at all. This week though, THFF, ASTE, and PSEC all have at least one thing in common, and that's the fact that they're all going into my mental/hypothetical portfolio.

Small cap stocks KBridge Energy Corp (OTCMKTS: BMMCF), Medifocus Inc (OTCMKTS: MDFZF) and Inscor Inc (OTCMKTS: IOGA) have been getting some attention lately in various investment newsletters and some of it is deserved as the first stock sank 35% on Friday, the second one recently released its financials (which did show a big improvement, but there is also a big catch for investors) and the third one has been the subject of a very aggressive promotional campaign. But are any of these three small caps really all that hot for investors? Here is a quick reality check:

Best Performing Stocks To Own For 2014: iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund (EFA)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

That last option can actually work well with a diversified portfolio. For instance, Vanguard Total Stock (NYSEMKT: VTI  ) , iShares MSCI EAFE ETF (NYSEMKT: EFA  ) , and other high-growth-potential investments can produce the most tax savings in a Roth, while iShares Core Bond (NYSEMKT: AGG  ) , Vanguard Total Bond (NYSEMKT: BND  ) , and other taxable income-oriented investments can fit well in a traditional retirement account.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Many of Fidelity'score offerings have extremely low bid-ask spreads of just a penny per share. But especially among funds where iShares replaced former offerings with similar new funds, bid-ask spreads are uncomfortably high in some cases. For instance, the iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF has a much lower expense ratio of 0.14% than the 0.34% of the $41 billion iShares MSCI EAFE ETF (NYSEMKT: EFA  ) , but the newly commission-free fund has an average bid-ask spread of 0.1%, equating to a typical spread of more than a nickel per share. You'll find a similar phenomenon comparing the iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF with the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (NYSEMKT: EEM  ) , with lower costs for the former offsetting greater liquidity for the latter. The tiny iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Small-Cap ETF has the highest average bid-ask spread of the lot, at a whopping 1.5%. With a dozen funds sporting bid-ask spreads of more than a quarter-percent, you'll pay a high price for the lack of liquidity in some of the funds iShares and Fidelity have made available.

Shares of Herbalife (HLF) have tumbled after hedge-fund manager William Ackman said he would present evidence of fraud at the nutritional supplement company. CNBC has the details(and the video of Ackman’s comments):

    Reuters

Bill Ackman, head of hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management, said his firm’s presentationofaHerbalifeinvestigation will “expose incredible fraud.”

“We have hundreds of hours of internal video, Ackman told CNBC’s Halftime Report. “We have some internal documents that were given to us by some employees.”

“This will be the most important presentation that I have made in my career,” he said. “We won’t disappoint.”

None other than Jim Cramer Tweeted: “I reiterate, Ackman has decided to put $HLF out of business so he will. It is not that hard to do that if you have a ton of money.”

Shares of Herbalife have dropped 11% to $54.08 at 3:30 p.m. while Nu Skin (NUS) has fallen 2.4% to $60.91 and Usana Health Services (USNA) has declined 7% to $67.75.

  • [By Intelligent Speculator]

Of course, it important to know what youe getting yourself into. When Bill Ackman went public with his Herbalife (HLF) short, he ended up generating a lot of attention and a short term drop but later on, some big players ended up taking the other side making his life more difficult.

  • [By Marshall Hargrave]

Has the market lost faith in Ackman that quickly? Granted, the media has had a field day over the J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP) debacle, not to mention the virtual implosion of his Herbalife (NYSE: HLF) short. However, Ackman is coming off one of his biggest wins with Canadian Pacific Railway (NYSE: CP), which also happens to be in the industrials sector. His Pershing Square hedge fund managed to make 2.5 times its money in just around two years at Canadian Pacific.
