Step aside, Internet schemers, the newest imposters on the block are phony phone callers from fake brokerage firms.
The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in its most recent investor alert warns that old-fashioned cold calls by brokerage firm imposters have caught on as the latest phishing trend.
“Recently, FINRA has received reports that scamsters are posing as employees of at least one well-known brokerage firm to obtain personal information,” FINRA reported. “In a new twist to Internet phishing schemes, which use spam email to lure you into revealing everything from Social Security numbers to financial account information, it appears that some fraudsters may be resorting to a time-tested method — the telephone call.”
Fraudsters using the scam start by cold-calling potential victims and posing as associates of a well-known brokerage firm. In some cases, people who have received these calls are actually customers of the legitimate brokerage firm, FINRA warns.

Severalvery well-known apps are not on either top five list, buteach must get millions of downloads a month. Twitter, weather apps, Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P), eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY), Gmail, Pinterest, Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), Skype and Groupon Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN) already rule across the PC, tablet and smartphone “ecosystems.” None of these is likely to lose popularity, and some probably will gain more.

Getty Images Usually when companies fight each other, it's consumers who get the worst of it. But right now, we're witnessing a business battle that's actually benefiting consumers in a big way. In this corner: Amazon (AMZN). In that corner: Overstock.com. At stake: Which site gets to claim it has the lowest prices on books. For years, Amazon has had sole possession of those bragging rights. But Overstock, a discounter not as widely known for its book offerings, is trying to make a splash in the book game by beating Amazon on price. Starting July 22, the site began offering to match Amazon's prices on hundreds of thousands of books, and then lower the price by another 10 percent. Overstock is applying the program to 360,000 of its titles. Not to be outdone, Amazon is going through its list and discounting its books to beat those prices -- which is causing Overstock's computers to respond by lowering their own prices again. The result is a race to the bottom, with the book-buying public realizing huge discounts on even the most popular books. Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl," for instance, is a bestseller that came out in June and has a list price of $25. It's currently $12.84 at Amazon, but Overstock has it for just $10.63. The Amazon price history of the book shows that the price started dipping shortly after Overstock's price-match program went into effect. The price war is largely being fought by the two e-tailers' computers, which are programmed to periodically check the competition's prices and beat them. While algorithms of this sort have gone a little screwy in the past -- consider the case of the biology textbook that wound up priced at $23 million -- we're guessing there a fail-safes in place here to make sure the prices don't go too low. That's probably why we aren't seeing books selling for pennies on either site right now, and likely won't. Still, Overstock pledged Thursday that it would keep up the promotion for at least another week. So if ther

In contrast Samsung had a superb time, reporting a YoY growth of 32.0%, as its shipments increased from 8.5 million to 11.2 million in a years time. However, the most impressive growth was displayed by the fast growing Chinese manufacturer Lenovo (LNVGY). The company reported a stupendous growth of 224.3% in tablet shipments and presently accounts for 4.1% of the global tablet market, up from 1.3% in 1Q13. Lenovo has been taking its devices very seriously and seems to be hell-bent on making a mark on the space, clearly understood from its acquisition of Google (GOOG) owned Motorola.

The YouTube app was gone. On Aug. 6, 2012, MacRumors was one of the first to notice that Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG ) video-sharing app had been pulled from Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL ) iOS. This wasn't the first Google app to be ousted. Its sudden disappearance followed the banishment of Google Maps. This seemed to be the beginning of the end for Google on iOS.

Analysts in Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG ) $1,000 club were probably hoping for some upside surprise when the company announced second-quarter earnings on July 18. Unfortunately, the report didn't get the Street excited. Could a dull earnings release prevent Google stock from reaching that big number?

One interesting fight that AT&T is taking on is Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG ) fiber-Internet initiative. With Google expecting to build a gigabit fiber network in Austin, Texas, AT&T, which serves the city, has responded with its own gigabit fiber network plans. Neither network is likely to appear before next year, but what happens in Austin could define the future of high-speed Internet service across the country.

For some reason, certain companies can attract buyers no matter the circumstance. I would put Symantec (SYMC) in that category. Shares have gained nearly 20% this year even as Symantec prospects deteriorated.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By CMI Research]
Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) is often overlooked by individual investors who tend to focus on hotter trending tech names such as Google (GOOG) or Facebook (FB). However, this shouldn't be the case as the 3 month average volume for Yahoo (largely from institutional investors) has been 17 million shares, with a market cap of $27.6 billion, and a share price that is up 80.76% in its last 12 months (as of the end of Thursday, 22nd August 2013). With an increase like that, is it possible that the share price is still undervalued? I believe so. A good indicator is the recent news from ComScore, which indicates that Yahoo topped Google in the U.S. for Web Traffic in July, 2013 (the first time since May, 2011). The past eighteen years for Yahoo! Inc., haven't exactly been smooth sailing, and the recent efforts from Yahoo certainly deserve applause as they've been steadily marching forward with their turnaround.

IAC isn the most loved company on the street, which is evidenced by that 8.80 percent short position. However, IAC continues to deliver on the top and bottom lines. As long as that remains to be the case, IAC is an OUTPERFORM.

InterActiveCorp (IACI) bought Ask.com for $1.85 billion in 2005. The new Perion will be worth only about 40% of that. After the merger, Perion will leapfrog its much larger rivals: Babylon and AVG (AVG). Finally, Perion should be able to increase its operating margins as it can spread its SG&A costs over a much larger base (Conduit EBITDA margin is 32% vs. Perion's 23%). Perion will keep its senior management team intact: Josef Mandelbaum will remain its CEO and Yacov Kaufman its CFO. Perion has successfully orchestrated a roll-up acquisitions of privately-held Sweetpacks and Smilebox, so I have high confidence that they know how to integrate a new business.

On one side, President Barack Obama is for it, as are state and local leaders, as well as the National Retail Federation. Even Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN ) supports the measure. On the other side are eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY ) and anti-tax groups like the Americans for Tax Reform. Also on the nay side are two big financial industry groups: The Financial Services Roundtable, and the Securities and Financial Markets Association, both of which are imploring senators to slow down and consider how this legislation would affect banks and other financial institutions.
