Top 10 Gas Stocks To Buy Right Now

It's been a wonderful run for the Lamborghini Gallardo, but now the brand thinks it has come up with a worthy successor: the Huracan.

The official rollout of the Huracan won't come until the Geneva Motor Show next year, with first deliveries in the spring, but as 2013 rolls to a close, Lambo officials apparently wanted the world to see what the future holds.

Huracan will be powered by a new 5.2-liter V-10 engine that delivers 610 horsepower. It has a rare combination of both direct and indirect gas injection aimed at optimal performance and better fuel economy compared to the Gallardo engine. The engine is combined with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

That engine/transmission combination, along with the car's low weight and aerodynamics, should result in a top speed just over 200 miles per hour. With its computer-controlled all-wheel-drive system, powering from zero to 62 miles per hour should take a mere 3.2 seconds. To 124 miles per hour (200 kilometers per hour): a lickity-split 9.9 seconds. The car will automatically shut off the engine at stop lights, so-called start-stop technology to further save gas.

Over the course of 365 days, that works out to $31.4 billion annually, or just a bit more than what Exxon says that it paid in taxes, all on its lonesome. So ... does this mean that oil companies Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) and ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) , refiners Valero (NYSE: VLO  ) and Sunoco, natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) -- that all these members of "America's oil and natural gas industry," combined, paid basically no income taxes, and stuck Exxon with the bill?

Meanwhile, John Richels of Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN  ) , an energy producer with a market cap of nearly $22.5 billion, took home $12.8 million last year, not including the rise in the value of his pension. Even Ryan Lance, who heads up ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) , which has a market cap more than fivetimes that of Chesapeake's, only took home $19.3 million last year.

In addition to beating the market since the beginning of the year, diversified energy utilities, such as MDU Resources Group Inc (NYSE: MDU), Dominion Resources Inc (NYSE: D) and Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE), significantly outperformed pure-play or predominantly all-electric utilities, such as Duke Energy Corp (NYSE: DUK) and Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR), by as much as several percentage points (See Chart B).

Interestingly, among top performers, there was no dominant strategy for exploiting natural gas demand, as these firms were involved in all aspects of the value chain–from exploration and production to distribution and storage. These companies have not only been benefiting from a natural gas surplus, but also from the pressing need to expand US energy infrastructure to deliver this newfound bounty to businesses and households.
