10 Best Shipping Stocks To Watch For 2015

The new Consumer Reports survey of America's top appliance retailers is out, and the winner this time around is immediately clear: Abt.

Note to stock investors: Not "ABT," as in Abbot Labs, but "Abt" as in Abt Electronics, the Chicago-based superstore founded by Jewel and David Abt back in 1936.

Last year, Consumer Reports polled 22,888 of its subscribers on their impressions across 30,243 appliance purchases. In the just-released July issue of CR, the results came out, scoring nine of America's biggest retailers by sales (including one "retailer" that's actually an aggregation of small, independent stores) across eight separate categories. In reverse order of quality, the contestants in the "major appliances" category were:

P.C. Richard & Sons Best Buy (NYSE: BBY  ) Sears (NASDAQ: SHLD  ) hhgregg (NYSE: HGG  ) Home Depot (NYSE: HD  ) Lowe's (NYSE: LOW  ) Pacific Sales The aforementioned "independents"... Abt

Out of the nine, no single retailer won CR's coveted "red circle with a dot in the middle" in all eight categories. But Abt came darn near close to hitting that bull's-eye. In nearly every category -- haul-away services, installation, shipping, selection, product quality, service, and ease of checkout -- Abt hit the mark with perfect scores.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Robert Rapier]

The partnership has generated $7.6 billion of distributable cash flow (DCF) over the past nine years, paying out just short of three quarters of that total and reinvesting the rest. The long-term distribution coverage checks in at a prudent 134%.

  • [By Canadian Value]

As many of our clients know, Jensen focuses primarily on the discounted cash flow (DCF) method to value equities. Our long held belief is that the intrinsic value of a business is the present value of the cash flows the company is expected to pay its shareholders in the future. The remainder of this paper explores some of the advantages and disadvantages of using either DCF or multiples and outlines why we believe DCF is the more fundamentally sound way to value equities.

  • [By David Kerr]

Let take a look at using a version of the Discounted Cash Flow method (DCF) to valuate the share price. I will use the most recent Earnings Per Share of 2.32, an 18.9% growth rate over the next 10 years (which is the average EPS growth rate of the past 10 years), a Terminal Growth Rate of 2% (average inflation rate for 2013 so far), with 10 years of Terminal Growth at a Discount Rate of 12% to be safe. That leaves us with a Fair Value of $58.85 and a 42% Margin of Safety. That a healthy margin.

  • [By GuruFocus]

Free cash flow is a favorite parameter of value investors. It seems to make sense, because the value of a company is determined by how much cash it can generate over time. Value investors have developed discounted cash flow (DCF) models to estimate the value of companies.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tom Taulli]

As I pointed out about a year ago, SKUL stock would face some tough headwinds, such as:

Competition: It is intense, with operators like Beats by Dre, Incase, Urbanears, Soul, Sony (SNE), JVC, Bose and even Adidas (ADDYY). Fickleness: This is the bane of the fashion business. The Skullcandy brand isn’t too hip — that can change overnight, but success can be fleeting, too. Market Size: For the most part, Skullcandy has focused on the youth crowd, such as those who are snowboarders or skateboarders. The problem is that it’s a niche market, and one where the crowd rapidly moves on as it gets older.

These issues all remain for SKUL stock, as evidenced by the steep drop in the revenues in 2013.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Yet it's not really what Reebok parent Adidas (NASDAQOTH: ADDYY  ) was really looking for at the moment. Ever since the sneaker maker was acquired in 2006, it's served as a drag on Adidas' performance. It was looking for Reebok to finally turn to growth this year with new footwear and clothing-line introductions.

  • [By Steve Symington]

The catch? Footwear is obviously a crowded market, and behemoth competitors like Adidas (NASDAQOTH: ADDYY  ) and Nike (NYSE: NKE  ) have a lot to lose to bold up-and-comers like Under Armour. Heck, Under Armour even had to sue Nike recently after the larger company went so far as to release ad campaigns that appeared to blatantly copysome of UA's trademarked phrases.

Housing starts plunge in January

Housing starts fell sharply in January for the second straight month as cold and stormy weather continued to batter the recovering housing market.

Starts of single-family houses and apartments fell 16% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 880,000 last month after declining dramatically in December, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. Extreme winter weather is largely blamed for both poor showings after starts jumped to their highest level in a year in November.

Starts in December were revised up to an annual rate of 1.05 million from 990,000.

Economists had expected Commerce to report that starts fell to a 950,000 annual rate in January, according to their consensus estimate. Starts rose in the Northeast but declined in the rest of the country.

Applications — a gauge of future housing activity — fell 5.4% in January. Applications for permits to build single-family homes fell 1.3%.

Top 10 Retail Companies To Own In Right Now

The report follows this week's release of a closely watched index of home builders' outlook in February which declined at the fastest-ever pace and indicated that more builders view conditions as poor than good.

In a research note, UBS said the falling measure "suggests inclement weather probably depressed starts further in February."

Other factors may also be at work, such as rising mortgage rates that have dampened home sales.

Although 2014 is off to a rocky start amid the severe weather, many economists expect starts to total more than 1.1 million this year after reaching 923,000 in 2013. That was the most since 2007.

Advisors' Opinion:

We got several questions about Kayne Anderson Energy Total Return Fund (NYSE: KYE) during the chat. The main advantage of closed-end MLP funds is the diversification they provide, along with the convenience of a 1099 miscellaneous income tax form instead of having to deal with K-1 forms from each individual MLP. This makes a closed-end MLP fund a more attractive option for an IRA.

To help facilitate this destruction of value has been that Koss has bought back a lot of its shares as the company has been overvalued. The below quote is from its most recent annual report.
In April of 1995, the Board of Directors approved a stock repurchase program authorizing the Company to purchase from time to time up to $2,000,000 of its common stock for its own account. Subsequently, the Board of Directors periodically has approved increases in the stock repurchase program. As of June 30, 2012, the most recently approved increase was for additional purchases of $2,000,000, which occurred in October of 2006, for an aggregate maximum of $45,500,000, of which $43,360,247 had been expended through June 30, 2012 . No purchases were made during the year ended June 30, 2012. The Company intends to effect all stock purchases either on the open market or through pr! ivately negotiated transactions and intends to finance all stock purchases through its own cash flow or by bo rrowing for such purchases. As you can see from this page, most of KOSS' margins have dropped substantially since 2007. Especially of note is its operating margin, ROE and ROIC. Book value per share, cash flow per share, revenue and working capital have all dropped substantially as well. Normally when I have evaluated companies' cost of goods sold rising is what has caused the above metrics to drop, but that has stayed relatively stable over the years at KOSS. The culprit in this case is selling, general and administrative (SG&A) related expenses expressed below as a percentage of its sales. The following numbers were taken from Morningstar:

For investors, Qualcomm understand the benefits of cloud services. It seems there are numerous questions unresolved. Over the last decade, pharmaceutical companies have been aggregating years of research and development data into medical databases, initiating overhauls of its R&D and selling, general and administrative (SG&A) segments for Pharma. A company willing to build their capabilities, and open to a new view of value will likely achieve better outcomes. Delivering support, personalization, scalability, speed and flexibility are attractive areas for growth.

We should be careful to overstate the tax aspect of buybacks. For example, Q-Logic has a lot of cash overseas (almost all of its $500 million). The company could in theory make several tender offers for close to 50% of its market cap with that cash. This is the Teledyne (TDY) approach. Q-Logic doesnt do that for several reasons. One, it likes having some cash on hand at all time. But, more importantly, it doesnt want to pay the tax.

FedEx (FDX) ships so much stuff for so many industries in so many countries that the company (and to an extent, FDX stock itself) is rightly seen as a bellwether for the global economy.

FedEx-fdx-stockUnfortunately, when it comes to telling us what’s going on in the world, quarterly results at FedEx are stuck on repeat.

For a long time now, the message from FDX has been the same: Global economic growth is uneven and sluggish. At best.

FedEx has been dealing with the low-demand landscape through cost cuts and price hikes — and, for the most part, it has done admirably well.

However, with more shippers foregoing FedEx’s premium air-shipping services (they’re literally opting to take the slow boat from China), FDX has had little choice but to take planes out of service and raise some rates.

The result is that management has gained enough credibility in navigating sluggish global growth that even the latest disappointing quarterly report didn’t slam FDX stock.

FedEx: A Stock That Delivers

FedEx earnings for the fiscal second quarter actually missed Wall Street’s estimate by a fairly wide margin. Although FDX earned $500 million, or $1.57 a share, compared with $438 million, or $1.39, in last year’s second quarter, EPS missed analysts’ average forecast by 7 cents.

Slower volume expansion in the ground shipping business was likely to blame, even as last year’s Hurricane Sandy made for easier comparisons.

Hot India Stocks To Watch For 2016

FedEx stock dived at the open, but soon recovered. And well that it should. The market knows that global growth stinks and that’s going to continue to weigh on FedEx — and cause some volatility for FDX stock — for a while. However, more important is how FedEx and its cost structure is positioned for an eventual pickup in growth. And on that count, management has indeed done its job, setting up FDX stock for outperformance over the longer term.

FedEx’s operating margin — an indicator of cost control — rose significantly for the quarter. And in more evidence that FDX is on the right track, FedEx raised its full-year outlook. Once the market digested that news, FDX stock was essentially unchanged in midday trading.

As we’ve noted before, FedEx management is doing a good job guiding FDX through a prolonged period of anemic global growth. Eventually, you figure Europe, Asia and emerging markets will start to pick up. (We've already seen some improvement in Europe.)

Add in the benefits of a multiyear cost-cutting program and FedEx share repurchases, and FDX stock should continue to deliver market-beating returns in the long run.

As of this writing, Dan Burrows did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

    Why now?
Reuters notesthat, while Walmart's retirement plan has high turnover and relatively small account balances, which might dull interest in taking over the plan, its sheer size is unusual, and may be why Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) has entered into talks concerning taking over administrative duties from BAML. Bank of America is involved in these talks, too, which may turn into a bidding war. According to benefits company Brightscope, other large retailers such as Costco (NASDAQ: COST  ) and Target (NYSE: TGT  ) each have plans with assets in the $5 billion range.

  • [By David Hanson]

If done correctly, establishing or increasing a fee can avoid public outrage and be a great thing for shareholders. In late 2011, the beloved retailer Costco (NASDAQ: COST  ) clearly communicated to its member its intention to increase its annual membership fee by 10%, and in 2012, the company saw its highest annual membership renewal rate -- nearly 90% in the United States.

If you want to buy Wal-Mart stock you need only prove that Wal-Mart is selling for less than the business is worth. You don need to know why Wal-Mart sells for less than Costco or Dollar General (DG). In fact, you don even need to know how high or low Wal-Mart P/E is compared to those businesses. You only need to know one price and understand the value of one business.

This is a terrible idea because:

Can we really be more specific than people sell stocks because they don want to hold them and they buy stocks because they do want to hold them?

I skeptical about the idea of understanding the reasons for people buy and sell decisions. People are attracted to certain stocks and repulsed by others. These feelings aren totally unexplainable. I sure we can partially explain why certain celebrities are found especially attractive or repulsive by the general public. We could probably do the same for why certain stocks are found especially attractive or repulsive by the investing public. Beyond laying down some general principles of what investors do and don find attractive in a stock I think we mostly just be entertaining ourselves making up stories about stocks instead of just valuing stocks.

A flurry of acquisitions has already occurred in the past few years. Most recently, the Irish pharmaceutical conglomerate Shire (SHPG) bought Pennsylvania-based ViroPharma for $4.2 billion late last year. The deal gave Shire access to Cinryze, medicine for a rare blood disorder.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

AbbVie (ABBV) has dipped 2.1% to $56.21 after upping its bid for Shire (SHPG) to more than $51 billion. Shire has risen 0.9% to $239.65.

Delta Air Lines (DAL) has fallen 1.7% to $36.26 after it said it would cut some 85% of its flights to Venezuela to reduce its exposure to the bolivar.

  • [By George Budwell]

Shire plc (NASDAQ: SHPG  ) is in the process of buying orphan drug-specialist ViroPharma (NASDAQ: VPHM  ) for $4.2 billion, strengthening Shire's already robust commercial drug portfolio for rare diseases. The deal is expected to be finalized no later than Jan. 9, after Shire extended its tender offer to acquire all outstanding ViroPharma shares last week.

  • [By Alexander Maxwell]

The market for the treatment of chronic diabetic foot ulcers has been growing and larger companies have been taking notice. Many large pharmaceutical companies have their own treatments for chronic diabetic foot ulcers. The space has also caused some major acquisitions. In 2011, Shire (NASDAQ: SHPG  ) acquireda drug called Dermagraft for the treatment of slow-healing diabetic foot ulcers, through its $750 million acquisition ofAdvanced BioHealing. Dermagraft has been a rather lucrative product for Shire, with $153.8 million in saleslast year. As the market continues to grow, I would look for more partnerships with large pharmaceutical companies, and of course more research and development dollars being devoted toward the chronic diabetic foot ulcers indication.

We got numerous questions about Linn Energy (Nasdaq: LINE) in the chat. I commented on this in last week’s MLP Investing Insider, but it bears repeating here as there is obviously still a lot of interest. Igor’s answer to this question was “I expect the merger to close by year’s end, but I think Linn has some structural issues that go beyond [pending merg! er partner Berry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY)] with its debt load and past acquisition quality, so I’m steering clear. There are better upstream MLPs in our portfolios.”

Top Long Term Stocks To Watch Right Now

Some view stock market investing like gambling, but experienced investors who do their homework usually profit by doing market analysis. Yet even experienced investors debate which type of analysis - fundamental or technical - provides higher returns. Do they result in the same picks? What does it mean when the two approaches contradict?

The Difference Between Fundamental and Technical Analysis

In a nutshell, fundamental analysis aims to determine intrinsic value by looking at the strength of the business, a financial analysis and the operating environment including macroeconomic events. Technical analysis analyzes past market performance by looking at the chart activity of price movements, volume, moving averages and the statistics of various outcomes. Fundamental analysis assumes the efficient market theory holds in the long run and attempts to take advantage of inefficiencies in the short run.

Technical analysis assumes fundamentals are already priced in and tries to find patterns that lead to outcomes with high probabilities of occurring. Technical analysis also captures the psychological aspects of the market in the review of past patterns, whereas fundamental analysis fails to factor in investor psychology but believes fundamentals will rule in the long term, so short-term psychological blips will correct themselves. In general, there are differences in the types of investors that gravitate toward a specific type of analysis. Technicians are usually more short-term traders by nature, contrasting with the long-term view fundamentalists generally take.

Top Long Term Stocks To Watch Right Now: iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF)

iShares Lehman 7-10 Year Treasury Bond Fund (the Fund) seeks investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the intermediate-term sector of the United States Treasury market as defined by the Lehman Brothers 7-10 Year U.S. Treasury Index (the Index). Advisors' Opinion:

For comparison with bonds and equities, I also included the following ETFs in the analysis:

iShares Barclays 7 to 10 Year Treasury Bond (IEF). This ETF tracks the performance of intermediate-term treasury bonds and yields 1.7%. iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond (TLT). This ETF tracks the performance of long-term treasury bonds and yields 2.9%. iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bonds (HYG). This ETF tracks the performance of high yield corporate bonds. It yields 6.4%. SPDR S&P 500 (SPY). This ETF tracks the performance of the S&P 500 equity index and yields 2%.

To analyze the risks and return of floating rate CEFs, I used the Smartfolio 3 program (smartfolio.com), using data over the past 6 years. The results are shown in Figure 1, which plots the rate of return in excess of the risk free rate of return (called Excess Mu on the charts) against the historical volatility.

And finally, the yield on the 10-year Treasury has shot up -- meaning that the underlying bond prices have declined. Nearly a year ago, the benchmark security yielded less than 1.5%. Today, it's yielding more than 2.6%. It follows, then, that the prices of ETFs holding longer-duration Treasuries have responded in kind. Among others, the iShares Barclays 7-10 Year Treasury (NYSEMKT: IEF  ) is off by 6.9% since the beginning of May. And on the other side of the equation, funds that are short government bonds like the ProShares UltraShort 20+ Year Treasury (NYSEMKT: TBT  ) are in the midst of an impressive rally.

  • [By Matthew McCall]

The iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE: IEF) is down 3.5 percent in the last two months and is trading at three-month low. Since hitting an all-time high in 2012 the ETF is down 10 percent, however the downtrend may only be in the early stages. If interest rates on the 10-year move back to where they were in 2007 it would send IEF down another 20 percent.

The group worst performer this year is New York City-area grocer Fairway Group Holdings Corp.(FWM), off 58% in 2013. Fairway is also among the farthest from its 52-week high, closing Thursday at $7.57 after trading as high as $28.87 in July.

You can be forgiven if you've never heard of Fairway Group Holdings (NASDAQ: FWM  ) . The company is responsible for Fairway Market, a small chain of high-end grocery stores currently in and around the greater New York City metropolitan area.

Indeed, shoppers can even find natural and organic produce at Wal-Mart, and with Fairway Group Holdings (NASDAQ: FWM  ) having gone public earlier this year, there's no shortage of places shoppers can choose from to buy their all-natural produce. What is Sprouts offering that differentiates it from all of its rivals?Simply counting on a growth-by-expansion policy entails a lot of risk, so the only thing I see is its claim of better product selection and value.

All of this points to a rosy picture for premium grocery chains. Yet the stock performancee paint a very different picture. Compare the performance of publicly traded premium grocers — Whole Foods, Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM), The Fresh Market (TFM), and Fairway Group Holdings (FWM) — against that of the ultimate common-man grocer, Walmart. Since last October, Walmart is the only grocer stock that hasn seen substantial declines. What gives? I have one word for you: valuation.
