Best Cheapest Stocks To Invest In 2014

Daniel Acker/Bloomberg via Getty Images NEW YORK -- The average price of a gallon of gasoline in the United States dropped 13 cents in the past two weeks to its cheapest in nearly four years, according to the latest Lundberg survey released Sunday. Gasoline prices fell to $2.94 a gallon of regular grade gasoline, its lowest level since December 2010, according to the survey conducted on Nov. 7. The decline in price is largely driven by lower crude oil prices, which declined further during the period, said Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the survey. "Crude oil dominates what gasoline prices are and what gasoline prices will do," Lundberg said, noting that the direction of crude oil prices in the coming weeks and months will dictate whether gasoline prices will continue to fall further or begin trending upward. "If they don't decline further, then this will be the end or nearly the end of this very steep price drop," she said. The gasoline price is down about 28 cents from a year ago, and has dropped 78 cents from a 2014 peak of $3.72 in May. The highest price within the survey area was recorded in San Francisco at $3.27 a gallon, with the lowest in Memphis at $2.65.

Best Cheapest Stocks To Invest In 2014: Aethlon Medical Inc (AEMD)

Aethlon Medical, Inc. (Aethlon), incorporated on April 17, 1991, is a developmental-stage company. The Company is focused on creating medical devices that address unmet medical needs in cancer, infectious disease, and other life-threatening conditions.

The Company's Aethlon ADAPT (Adaptive Dialysis-Like Affinity Platform Technology) system is a revenue-stage technology platform that provides the basis for a new class of devices that provide rapid, selective removal of disease promoting particles from the entire circulatory system. The Aethlon ADAPT product pipeline includes the Aethlon Hemopurifier to address infectious disease and cancer, and a medical device being developed under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to reduce the incidence of sepsis in combat-injured soldiers.

The Aethlon Hemopurifier

The Company's Hemopurifier is a medical device that targets the rapid elimination of life-threatening infectious disease and cancer glycopathogens from circulation. Under the feasibility study protocol, the Company will enroll ten end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients who are infected with the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) to demonstrate the safety of Hemopurifier therapy. In addition to augmenting the early viral kinetic response to SOC, the Company's Hemopurifier provides a candidate solution for viral rebound patients who traditionally are forced to discontinue therapy at the point HCV establishes resistance to drug regimens. Additionally, the Company's Hemopurifier represents a therapeutic strategy to address the population of HCV-infected dialysis patients for which SOC and all-antiviral strategies may be contraindicated or not cleared.

In design, the Company's Hemopurifier consists of the affinity lectin Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) immobilized in the outer-capillary space of advanced plasma membrane technology. The design allows for extracorporeal therapeutic delivery to occur on standard CRRT and dialysis instruments alre! ady located in hospitals and clinics worldwide. The mechanism of the Hemopurifier to rapidly eliminate a broad-spectrum disease targets is based on GNA ability to selectively bind high mannose signatures that are abundant on the surface of cancer-secreted exosomes and glycoproteins that reside on the outer membrane of infectious viral pathogens. The Company has also established a compassionate-use treatment program at the Medanta Medicity Institute in India that provides treatment access to HCV-infected individuals.

The Company's Hemopurifier has also been discovered to capture tumor-secreted exosomes underlying several forms of cancer. Tumor-derived exosomes have recently emerged to be a vital therapeutic target in cancer care. These microvesicular particles suppress the immune response in cancer patients through apoptosis of immune cells and their quantity in circulation correlates directly with disease progression. In addition to treating HCV-infected individuals, the Company has conducted a single proof of principal treatment study related to the treatment of HIV. In the study, Hemopurifier therapy reduced viral load by 93% in an HIV-AIDS infected individual without the administration of antiviral drug therapy. The study protocol provided for 12 Hemopurifier treatments, each four hours in duration, that were administered over the course of one month. Researchers at a university have since discovered that the Hemopurifier is able to capture exosomes that transport NEF protein, which is known to suppress the immune response in HIV-infected individuals.

The Company has been assigned all rights and title to and interests in an invention and related worldwide patent rights for a method to treat cancer under an assignment agreement with the London Health Science Center Research, Inc. (LHSCRI) The agreement provides that the Company is responsible for paying certain patent application and filing costs as well as a 2% royalty on any future net sales. The Company has als! o exercis! ed an option to license a pending patent entitled, Method to Inhibit Proliferation and Growth of Metastases from The Trustees of Boston University. The license provides a development strategy for new cancer therapies by uniting drug agents that inhibit the spread of cancer-related metastases with filtration techniques already in the Aethlon Hemopurifier(R). The resulting devices would inhibit tumor growth by reducing the presence of circulating growth factors without interfering with surgical wound healing or the recovery of tissue injured by radiation therapy.

The Company competes with Asahi Kasei Kurary Medical.

Hey, Schwab, here’s how to increase the number of female advisers in your ranks

The Charles Schwab Corp. is looking for ways to boost the number of female financial advisers among its ranks after a survey found that 40% of its firms don't have a single woman advising clients.

The solution is not something quick, easy or particularly well-demonstrated by other financial firms. It's also something that Schwab's female financial advisers likely will have to lead.

Schwab has formed a task force to tackle the issue, but several female advisers attending the Schwab Impact Conference in Washington D.C. this week said the first step should be to get their male counterparts to recognize that they should have a woman on their team — and that they should make an effort to find one.

“We need to convince men that hiring a woman adviser can be a game changer for their business,” said Peggy Ruhlin, chief executive of Budros Ruhlin & Roe Inc.

Firms should demand that recruiters bring in qualified female candidates when they are looking to hire an adviser, she said. Many recruiters would have to up their game to do so, as only about 8% of client-facing advisers are women, according to Cerulli Associates Inc.

Another female adviser suggested that registered investment advisers try to hire “refugees” — the term she used for women who burn out while working for wirehouses and sometimes leave the industry altogether. These women should be targeted to join or start RIAs, she said.

Top 5 Beverage Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Financial adviser Michelle Higgins said women need to be mentoring other women in the business and helping them advance their careers. She also said female advisers should be reaching out to financial planning schools to show female students that there are successful women in this industry.

Women also will have to discuss some of the cultural difficulties they face in the financial services business and debunk certain perceptions, including that clients don’t want financial help from women.

Female advisers at the Schwab conference told stories like a male colleague commenting, “I’d love to hire some gals” and of others who don’t want to hire a woman because she might get pregnant and take time off.

Ms. Ruhlin said it can be enlightening to a male colleague in certain circumstances when she suggests that he “think about if that were your daughter.” She asks him whether he would have considered certain decisions fair if someone else had done the same to his child.

Advisors' Opinion:

One equity that falls under the small-cap umbrella, and looks poised to benefit from a contrarian boon is shipping concern Frontline Ltd. (FRO).

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Oil tankers could also see a benefit as well. With potential of the SUMED pipeline being shut down, it would mean that tankers would need to increase traffic by 2 million barrels per day and increase its shipment times as much as LNG tankers.Norway'sFrontline (NYSE: FRO  ) , the world's largest oil tanker fleet, has day rates of about $25,000 for its oil carriers, so it's not as much of a win as LNG carriers. Also, higher fuel prices for all shipments will eat into that revenue boost.

Best Diversified Bank Stocks To Own For 2014

Caterpillar (CAT) has surged by 31% in 2013 on the back of a broader market surge and an annual EPS estimate revision in the first quarter of 2014. The stock, however, seems overvalued based on its earnings forecast. This article looks at some of the key factors, which lead to the conclusion that Caterpillar can be avoided at current levels and investors can consider this stock on correction.

The China Factor

Robust economic growth in China and emerging Asia has a key role to play in Caterpillar growth and outlook. In 2011, Caterpillar recorded revenue of $60.1 billion, which surged to $65.9 billion in 2012.

However, after the growth slump in China, Caterpillar revenue declined to $55.7 billion in 2013 and the company forecasts that the revenue for 2014 will be marginally higher at $56 billion. The EPS for 2013 was $5.97, which slumped from $8.48 in 2012.

It is clear that economic growth in China has a key role to play in the company revenue growth and stock upside. According to IMF World Economic Outlook, China GDP growth expectation for 2014 and 2015 is 7.5% and 7.3%, respectively. This is marginally lower than China actual GDP growth of 7.7% for 2013. In other words, China economic outlook is likely to remain depressed for the next two years.

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty Images Government-controlled mortgage finance firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac said Thursday they will pay U.S. taxpayers $6.8 billion after reporting a third-quarter profits that modestly rose from the second quarter. Once they have made the latest payments in December, the two companies will have returned $225.5 billion to taxpayers in exchange for about $188 billion in taxpayer aid they received after being placed under the government's wing at the height of the financial crisis. Fannie Mae, the bigger of the two and the nation's largest source of mortgage funds, earned a net income of $3.9 billion in the third quarter, up from $3.7 billion in the second quarter. The increase was driven by higher net interest income, an increasing portion of which is derived from guaranty fees, and about $1.2 billion in settlement payments from Goldman Sachs (GS) and HSBC (HSBC) related to Fannie's investments in private-label mortgage securities sold by the two banks before the credit crisis. Slowing home-price appreciation was a drag on Fannie's profit growth. Based on its own home price index, Fannie estimated that U.S. home prices increased just 1.2 percent in the third quarter and are up just 5.3 percent in the year to date, after gaining 8.2 percent in 2013. On a year-over-year basis, Fannie's net income was down from $8.7 billion a year earlier. Freddie Mac, meanwhile, generated net income of $2.1 billion versus $1.4 billion in the second quarter. Like Fannie, Freddie also posted higher net interest income and benefited from $1.2 billion in legal settlements in the same litigation, which had been brought by the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency, which regulates both companies. Freddie's profit fell dramatically from a year earlier, when one-time tax benefits drove its net income to nearly $30.5 billion. Neither Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac lends money directly to home buyers. Rather, the two companies buy mortgages from le

After years of strong performance, emerging markets have recently underperformed developed markets (DM), as shown in Exhibit 1.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 stock that looks poised for a sharp move higher is Dolan (DM), a provider of necessary business information and professional services to the legal, financial and real estate sectors in the U.S. This stock has been hammered by the sellers so far in 2013, with shares off huge by 80%.

If you take a look at the chart for Dolan Company, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly over the last two months, with shares plunging lower from its high of $3 a share to its recent low of 66 cents per share. During that downtrend, shares of DM have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of DM into oversold territory, since its current relative strength index reading is 20. Oversold can always get more oversold, but it's also an area where a stock can make a powerful bounce higher from.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in DM if it manages to break out above Thursday's high of 77 cents per share and then above some more near-term overhead resistance at 80 cents per share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 321,823 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then DM will set up for a possible powerful bounce higher that could easily take this stock back above $1 to $1.20 a share.

Traders can look to buy DM off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right around some key near-term support levels at 71 cents to 66 cents per share. One can also buy DM off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Nine Lessons from the Greatest Trader Who Ever Lived

Top 10 Media Companies To Own In Right Now

The stock market has certainly produced its share of heroes and villains over the years. And while villains have been many, the heroes have been few.

One of the good guys (for me, at least) has always been Jesse L. Livermore. He's considered by many of today's top Wall Street traders to be the greatest trader who ever lived.

Leaving home at age 14 with no more than five bucks in his pocket, Livermore went on to earn millions on Wall Street back in the days when they still literally read the tape.

Long or short, it didn't matter to Jesse.

Instead, he was happy to take whatever the markets gave him because he knew what every good trader knows: Markets never go straight up or straight down.

In one of Livermore's more famous moves, he made a massive fortune betting against the markets in 1929, earning $100 million in short-selling profits during the crash. In today's dollars, that would be a cool $12.6 billion.

That's part of the reason why an earlier biography of his life, entitled Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, has been a must-read for experienced traders and beginners alike.

A gambler and speculator to the core, his insights into human nature and the markets have been widely quoted ever since.

Here are just a few of his market beating lessons:

On the school of hard knocks: The game taught me the game. And it didn't spare me rod while teaching. It took me five years to learn to play the game intelligently enough to make big money when I was right.

On losing trades: Losing money is the least of my troubles. A loss never troubles me after I take it. I forget it overnight. But being wrong - not taking the loss - that is what does the damage to the pocket book and to the soul.

On trading the trends: Disregarding the big swing and trying to jump in and out was fatal to me. Nobody can catch all the fluctuations. In a bull market the game is to buy and hold until you believe the bull market is near its end.

On sticking to his plan: What beat me was not having brains enough to stick to my own game - that is, to play the market only when I was satisfied that precedents favoured my play. There is the plain fool, who does the wrong thing at all times everywhere, but there is also the Wall Street fool, who thinks he must trade all the time. No man can have adequate reasons for buying or selling stocks daily - or sufficient knowledge to make his play an intelligent play.

On speculation: If somebody had told me my method would not work, I nevertheless would have tried it out to make sure for myself, for when I am wrong only one thing convinces me of it, and that is, to lose money. And I am only right when I make money. That is speculating.

On respecting the tape: A speculator must concern himself with making money out of the market and not with insisting that the tape must agree with him. Never argue with it or ask for reasons or explanations.

On human nature and trading: The speculator's deadly enemies are: Ignorance, greed, fear and hope. All the statute books in the world and all the rule books on all the Exchanges of the earth cannot eliminate these from the human animal.

On riding the trend to the big money: Men who can both be right and sit tight are uncommon. I found it one of the hardest things to learn. But it is only after a stock operator has firmly grasped this that he can make big money. It is literally true that millions come easier to a trader after he knows how to trade than hundreds did in the days of his ignorance.

On the nature of Wall Street: Wall Street never changes, the pockets change, the suckers change, the stocks change, but Wall Street never changes, because human nature never changes.

So, what ever happened to Jesse L. Livermore?

He didn't die a poor man - not by any stretch of the imagination.

But he did take his own life, believing he was "a failure," which proves once again that money can't buy happiness.

5 Big Trades for a Market Top

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Has the market already topped? Well, only in the most literal sense.

Ongoing conflict in Syria is spooking the stock market this week, as Wall Street worries about the possibility that the U.S. will get involved in the action. Stocks fell hard on Tuesday, after Secretary of State John Kerry spoke to the media about the possibility of military response to gas attacks in the country. Yesterday's rebound barely made a dent in getting the big indexes out of the red.

But while U.S. equities are in make-or-break mode again this week, it's a bit early to call it a top. Let's not forget that the S&P 500 is a mere 4.4% off of all-time highs now -- and the big index still higher today than it was anytime up until this summer.

Nope, a crash this isn't.

But the increased anxiety is creating some tradable opportunities right now. Today, we're taking a technical look at five of them.

If you're new to technical analysis, here's the executive summary.

Technicals are a study of the market itself. Since the market is ultimately the only mechanism that determines a stock's price, technical analysis is a valuable tool even in the roughest of trading conditions. Technical charts are used every day by proprietary trading floors, Wall Street's biggest financial firms, and individual investors to get an edge on the market. And research shows that skilled technical traders can bank gains as much as 90% of the time.

Every week, I take an in-depth look at big names that are telling important technical stories. Here's this week's look at five high-volume stocks to trade this week.

SPDR S&P 500 ETF

Up first, it makes sense to take a look at the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY). After all, SPY is the most investible proxy for the S&P 500 index -- and one of the best way to "buy stocks" in general. A quick look at the chart should tell you everything you need to know about this stock. You don't have to be an expert technical analyst to see that SPY is still in an uptrend.

Even though the uptrend in stocks got shifted lower with June's correction, the trendline connecting this rally's lows is very well defined right now -- and it's getting tested this week. A breakdown below trendline support would be a very negative signal for stocks in the intermediate term. But as of yet, it hasn't happened. In fact, tests of trendline support have historically been the optimal time to buy shares on the way up. So with SPY testing its price floor again now, it makes sense to buy early signs of a bounce.

Buying off a support bounce makes sense for two big reasons: It's the spot where shares have the furthest to move up before they hit resistance, and it's the spot where the risk is the least (because shares have the least room to move lower before you know you're wrong).

The bottom line is this: It's still way too early to turn bearish on this market.

Chevron

Surprisingly, one of the names that's correlating the highest with the S&P 500 right now is oil and gas supermajor Chevron (CVX). Just like the S&P, Chevron is trading in a very well-defined trend channel. The key difference is that the Chevron trade is further along; this stock is bouncing off of trendline support this week. That means it's time to be a buyer.

Commodities and materials stocks are seeing some buoyancy this week, but Chevron's price action is different -- it's been more sustained over the course of 2013. This stock's proximity to trendline support right now makes it the best-in-breed oil name in my view. As geopolitical risks propel oil prices, the real story at CVX is the fact that support is just a few points away. That makes Chevron a great setup from a risk management perspective.

Speaking of risk management, if you decide to jump into shares here, I'd recommend keeping a protective stopprotective stop just above the 200-day moving average.

Wal-Mart

Not all blue chip names look quite as bullish right now -- take Wal-Mart (WMT). The retail behemoth looks downright "toppy" thanks to a long-term bearish setup that's been playing out in shares. Now, this stock is very close to triggering a sell (or short) signal for traders.

Wal-Mart is currently forming a double top, a price setup that's formed by two swing highs at the same level. A move through $72.50 support signals that the last contingent of buyers have gotten swatted out of this stock, and it's time to be a seller. This morning, WMT is perilously close to that $72.50 breakdown level. That said, don't consider this pattern triggered until WMT moves materially though it.

Support at $66 looks like a reasonable downside target for this stock. Investors looking for a bargain-priced entry in WMT should hold out for shares to hit $66 before trying to go long. For the time being, bears are stacked in this stock.

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store

Things are looking a whole lot more promising for another chain based in the south, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store (CBRL). This small-cap restaurant stock has been on a tear in 2013, rallying more than 54% since the calendar flipped over to January. And now, a bullish price setup points to even more upside in the second half of the year.

CBRL is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a price setup formed by horizontal resistance above shares at $102, and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as CBRL bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above that $102 price ceiling. When that happens, it makes sense to be a buyer.

Top 5 Undervalued Companies To Buy Right Now

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Triangles, double tops, and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in this stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That resistance line at $102, for example, is a price where there is an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to take recent gains and sell their shares than buyers are to buy. That's what makes the move above it so significant -- the breakout indicates that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

The 50-day moving average has been a stellar proxy for support on the way up. I'd put a protective stop on the other side of it.

Tesoro Petroleum

Last up is Tesoro Petroleum (TSO), a petroleum refiner that hasn't enjoyed the strength of its peers in recent weeks. In fact, this stock looks downright bearish right now, thanks to a textbook topping signal in shares. Here's how to trade it.

TSO is forming a head and shoulders top, a bearish reversal pattern that indicates exhaustion among buyers. The head and shoulders is formed by two swing highs that top out around the same level (the shoulders), separated by a bigger peak called the head; the sell signal comes on the breakdown below the pattern's "neckline" level, which was right at $50. The breakdown happened earlier this month.

But traders are getting a second chance for a low-risk entry in a TSO short. That's because this stock pulled back to retest newfound resistance at the neckline. Indeed, there's still plenty of downside room left in this name right now. This is a long-term setup with long-term trading implications.

Best Energy Stocks To Own For 2014

Editor's Note: Yesterday Iraq descended into full-blown civil war.

At the same time, Russian oil interests - specifically those of the Russian parastatal Gazprom - are hitting Western-placed hurdles to their coveted South Stream natural gas pipeline project to the West. That's right when Putin and the Kremlin need it most.

These two events are hundreds - in some cases thousands - of miles apart, but they will have major, immediate impacts on energy prices. And understandably, investors are worried.

Yesterday, we caught up with Dr. Kent Moors for his unique insight, just as he finished speaking to the country in a Fox News interview. Kent had a very different take on events, saying, "We're in an unusually advantageous situation for American investors."

In similar fashion, Noble is going to concentrate its efforts on the high-margin deepwater drilling business and leave the shallow-water business. Last May, Noble won a contract with Statoil ASA (NYSE: STO) for a North Sea project in deep water and a harsh environment that Noble hopes will lead to strategic relationship with Statoil in the coming developments in the Arctic.

The Oil & Gas business also provides key technology used in extraction, development, and environmental protection of shale gas. GE is the
world leader in gas-powered generation and transportation. Under water, last year GE launched the first subsea compressor for Statoil (STO), creating an industry-leading position in a new market.

Also, as with its competitors, Halliburton registered meaningful achievements during the quarter, including the above-mentioned new contracts with Petrobras (NYSE: PBR  ) in Brazil. Those four-year contracts can be expanded for a second equal term, and potentially could result in more than $2.0 billion in revenue for Halliburton. In addition, the company will provide multilateral technology for a pair of mature Statoil (NYSE: STO  ) fields in Norway. That work is based upon a three-year contract, with a pair of possible two-year extensions.

Despite Craighead's relative ebullience regarding North America, it nevertheless appears that the sizzle at Baker Hughes lies in the international markets. As I noted last week, the company has teamed up with CGGVeritaz (NYSE: CGG  ) to add substantial seismic capabilities to its global repertoire. Further, it's working with Norway's Statoil (NYSE: STO  ) on new projects in the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea, and the Barents Sea. It's also been contracted by Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) for work on the giant Gorgon project in Australia, and its gearing up with Russia's Lukoil and Statoil on the West Qurna-2 oil fields in Iraq.

Here's a quick look at what the other refining midstream MLPs are yielding right now.
